Falling Through the Cracks: How Laws Allow Child Marriage to Happen in Today’s America

This Tahirih Justice Center report (originally published in August 2017) is the first comprehensive analysis of provisions in all 50 states and Washington, DC that leave children more vulnerable to forced marriage and the harms of early marriage. The report provides state lawmakers and advocates in the United States with the information they need to pass laws that more effectively protect children from the harms of child marriage.

The report’s fundamental examination of common exceptions to minimum marriage age laws remains pertinent, but a number of states have passed at least some reforms in this interim. To track progress in the movement or to access current 50-state analyses and compilations of marriage-age laws, please see our other resources at tahirih.org/childmarriage.
