Tahirih in 2022
Staff Demographics
Inclusion is indispensable to our ability to serve our clients. Tahirih celebrates and honors people’s diverse identities, and we are committed to ending racism and White supremacy in all its forms — including within our organization. Most of our leadership, staff, and Board of Directors identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC) and the majority identify as women or non-binary. Nearly half identify as survivors of or witnesses to gender-based violence.
A 2019 survey of nonprofit staff from across the United States provided a benchmark for assessing our staff diversity. Compared to other nonprofits, Tahirih staff includes a larger proportion of individuals who identify as Asian, multi-racial, or Hispanic, Latin American, or Spanish, as well as a higher percentage of staff who are immigrants or the children of immigrants.
There is always room for improvement and learning, but we are proud to offer a look at our organizational diversity.

29% of Tahirih staff identify as immigrants and 41% have immigrant parents.

Out of the 29% of Tahirih staff who identified themselves as immigrants, 17% identified themselves as survivors as well.

Tahirih staff members also speak Russian, Bengali, Somali, Italian, Akan (Twi), Hindi, Thai, and Farsi.

Our board of directors is composed of individuals who identify as immigrants and/or survivors, and former Tahirih clients.

71% of Tahirih board members are women.

Tahirih helped me obtain a green card, and then I was able to have a full-time job. Now, I am able to provide for my children. I would not be where I am today if it were not for Tahirih’s dedication to provide me with legal, social, and moral support. Tahirih was there for me when I needed them the most — when I was at the lowest point of my life.

2021 Financials
In 2021, Tahirih had an operating budget of $11.2M. Thanks to the generosity of our Pro Bono Network of attorneys, medical professionals, and other experts, the value of in-kind donated services was $13.6M, bringing our total budget to $24.8M.
