Falling Through the Cracks: How Laws Allow Child Marriage to Happen in Today’s America

This Tahirih Justice Center report (originally published in August 2017) is the first comprehensive analysis of provisions in all 50 states and Washington, DC that leave children more vulnerable to forced marriage and the harms of early marriage. The report provides state lawmakers and advocates in the United States with the information they need to pass laws that more effectively protect children from the harms of child marriage.

The fundamental analysis in the report remains current, but the first two appendices have been replaced by new “scorecards” on states’ minimum marriage age laws, updated as of July 1, 2019, to reflect changes that many states have made to their minimum marriage age laws since August 2017. Please click here to see the new appendices.
