Tahirih sends delegation of staff and supporters to Women in World Summit

A Tahirih Justice Center delegation of 10 staff members and key supporters attended Newsweek and the Daily Beast’s Women in the World Summit at the Lincoln Center in New York City on March 9, 2012. Tahirih’s representatives were part of an elite group participating in conversations on the cutting-edge of women’s rights.

The Women in the World Summit guest list included current and former U.S. Secretary of States Hillary Clinton and Madeleine Albright, celebrities Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, and Oprah, and award-winning journalists Barbara Walters, Christiane Amanpour, and Andrea Mitchell.

During the Summit, Tahirih Founder and Executive Director Layli Miller-Muro accepted the DVF People’s Choice Award at the DVF Awards Ceremony at the United Nations, an event sponsored by designer and philanthropist Diane Von Furstenberg. The Award included a $50,000 grant for Tahirih lifesaving work and provided an opportunity to share Tahirih’s mission with a larger audience.

Tahirih Board Member Debra Winger introduced Layli Miller-Muro, who spoke about the plight of Tahirih’s clients. Backstage, Miller-Muro connected with the other honorees and guest presenters, and left the ceremony extremely touched and star-struck by Oprah’s empathy.

“She cupped my cheek with her hand and insisted, ‘I know you. Your client was on my show in 1997—thank you for all that you do.’ I was honored she remembered me and our work,” Miller-Muro said of the meeting.
