In this op-ed, Morgan Weibel, Executive Director of Tahirih SF Bay Area, writes about the most recent proposed regulations that would decimate the asylum system and eliminate gender-based asylum. Weibel shares the story of Aicha, a former client and advocate, who would have been unable to access asylum if these regulations had been in place.
Weibel writes:
“As a nation that has long touted itself as a beacon of liberty and justice yet is culpable for destabilization of many countries where people are experiencing persecution, we cannot look away. Everyone deserves a life free from violence. We must act now to save gender-based asylum.”
