The Huffington Post profiles Aracely Martinez Yanez, who escaped from Honduras after surviving a gun-shot wound in her head, inflicted by her abusive partner. After arriving in the United States, she was referred to the Tahirih Justice Center, where attorney Kristin Strain worked on her asylum case.

“Women like Aracely are saving their own lives,” said Strain.

Due to the Attorney General’s recent decision that domestic violence should not be considered as grounds for asylum, women like Aracely could be turned away at the border.

“This administration is trying to close the door to refugees,” said Archi Pyati, Chief of Policy at Tahirih.
