The Tahirih Justice Center is heartbroken and outraged by the killing of Renee Nicole Good. This is not an isolated tragedy and could have happened in any of our communities. In the last four months alone, immigration officers have fired on at least nine people in five states and Washington, D.C., and this is on top of the many deaths we couldn’t see – the 32 people who lost their lives in ICE custody last year, making 2025 the agency’s deadliest year in more than two decades.

“I’ve watched multiple videos of the shooting, taken from different angles. I’ve heard anguish in a neighbor’s voice who witnessed it,” said Archi Pyati, CEO of the Tahirih Justice Center. “When government agents use unchecked violence against civilians without accountability, regardless of the color of their skin or where they were born, it makes all of us less safe.”

Survivors of abuse and exploitation are already at risk—militarized enforcement and unchecked force only push them further into the shadows.

Accountability is not optional. We seek effective, meaningful oversight, transparent investigations, and review of violence, brutality, and human rights violations committed by government agencies. Congress and the administration must take action in addition to state and local officials in order to keep all communities safe.

We can have a functioning, legal, and humane immigration system without the threat of lethal violence, and we must – because every person deserves to live in safety, regardless of where they are born.
