In response to executive orders issued on April 28, 2025, Tahirih’s Director of Public Policy Casey Carter Swegman issued the following statement:

“Everyone in the United States deserves to live in safe communities, free from violence. Forcing local law enforcement to do the job of federal immigration authorities will not promote public safety. It will strain already stretched public safety resources and it will create fear and mistrust between communities and police that makes us all less safe.

The White House claims these orders will “strengthen and unleash America’s law enforcement.” But Tahirih knows from almost 30 years of experience that when there is entanglement between local police and ICE, immigrants are discouraged from seeking help and reporting crimes, and survivors will be especially harmed.

No survivor of domestic violence should ever have to face the impossible choice of calling the police for help and risking deportation or living with violence.”
