  • Tahirih Afghan Asylum Training on Affirmative Asylum Interview Prep

    In support of our pro bono teams representing survivors through our Afghan Asylum Project, our team delivered training to our AAP pro bonos to give them an overview of the steps after filing the affirmative asylum application, what to expect during the interview, and some tips on how to prepare the client for their asylum interview. This recording provides general information and tips and has some information specific to Afghan asylum applications filed under Operation Allies Welcome. See recording Here

  • Tahirih Pro Bono: Afghan Asylum Training

    Please join us on November 9, 2021, to learn about the legal limbo facing arriving Afghan refugees and how you can help. After providing a real-time snapshot of the legal context, we will review the law of asylum with a special focus on cases involving gender-based persecution. The training will be presented by Tahirih Justice Center supervising attorney Sasha Bershad and CEO Archi Pyati.

    Tahirih is national non-profit providing free legal and social services to immigrants fleeing gender-based violence. In September, Tahirih launched a national helpline for arriving Afghan refugees and has since been providing support, information, referrals, and advocacy. This training will give you the tools and understanding to be a part of this response.

  • January 2021 Tahirih Pro Bono Network Webinar: Policy Updates at the Start of 2021

    Join Tahirih’s Litigation Counsel Richard Caldarone for breaking updates on immigration law and policy, and relevant agency updates related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Then will move on to Substantive Legal Updates discussing the last two immigration regulations issued by the Trump administration. Litigation Counsel will turn to the new immigration and asylum executive orders signed by the new administration. Lastly, will be discussing what should we expect from the new administration. Ending with policy memos and sub-regulatory changes on both EOIR and DHS.

  • DECEMBER 2020 Pro Bono Webinar _ 2020 in Review and Preparing for 2021

    Join Tahirih staff for a review of the 2020 legal and advocacy landscape and pro bono network work, before turning to a discussion of preparation and predictions for legal advocacy of immigrant survivors in the new year. Tahirih’s Litigation Counsel Richard Caldarone will be sharing updates on immigration law and policy, and relevant agency updates related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Then at the 30:15 mark the panelist SR. Immigration policy counsel, Irena Sullivan and Cheif of Programs, Rena Cutlip-Mason will be addressing Tahirih top priorities to restore and protect gender base Asylum. This Webinar is designed to be 2020 in review and importantly, a post-election preview into what we might expect in 2021 with either a continued administration or a new administration.

  • NOVEMBER 2020 Tahirih Pro Bono Network Webinar: Immigrant Visa and Derivative Asylee Consular Processing

    Join Tahirih’s Litigation Counsel, Richard Caldarone will begin briefing on recent immigration law and policies including agency updates related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Then at the 10:14 mark DOJ Accredited Representative, Chelsea Naylor, will discuss the basics of Immigration Visa and Derivative Asylee Consular Processing, including practice pointers and resources. A breakdown of immigrant visas vs non-immigrant visas. Additionally, covering the second part of consular processing, getting a client’s derivatives legally enter the united states with an immigrant visa and meet eligibility requirements.

    Join Tahirih’s Litigation Counsel Richard Caldarone for breaking updates on immigration law and policy, and relevant agency updates related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Then at the 27:10 mark San Francisco Bay Area’s Executive Director, Morgan Weibel, will discuss Strategies to Corroborate your Client’s Claim. Whether you are seeking to meet your VAWA, T visa or U visa client’s burden on the “any credible evidence standard” or endeavoring to meet the heightened REAL ID Act requirements on credibility and corroboration for your asylum client, corroboration of your client’s facts and testimony is an essential element to a successful claim. In the October 2020 Pro Bono Network webinar, Tahirih staff will explore why corroboration matters and identify strategies to successfully corroborate your client’s claim through sources including primary evidence and affidavits from witnesses within the U.S. or abroad. As always, the panel also will brief attendees on recent immigration law and policy updates, including any relevant agency updates related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • September 2020 Pro Bono Network Webinar: Understanding Waivers and Extreme Hardship in Humanitarian Cases

    Join Tahirih’s Co-Director of Client Advocacy Kursten Phelps and Litigation Counsel Richard Caldareone for breaking updates on immigration law and policy, and relevant agency updates related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Then at the 26:11 mark the panel will continue last month’s discussion on screening for inadmissibility by introducing viewers to the world of waivers. Discussion includes a review of which waivers are available for which inadmissibility grounds and case types, as well as examines relevant waiver standards, including the extreme hardship standard.
