    The Tahirih Justice Center and partner organizations filed this amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in support of a Honduran survivor of domestic violence who is seeking asylum, challenging the Board of Immigration Appeals’ application of the decision in Matter of A-B- to her case.

    The Tahirih Justice Center is deeply concerned by the announcement of the new policy announced by the Department of Homeland Security which would force asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while awaiting their court dates in the U.S. Tahirih is certain that the “Remain in Mexico” policy will have serious negative impacts for asylum seekers.

    The Tahirih Justice Center is deeply concerned by the data in the new report released by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services titled “How the U.S. Immigration System Encourages Child Marriages”.  Tahirih is particularly alarmed by the number of U.S. minors who apparently successfully petitioned for foreign spouses despite a law already in place that should prevent these marriages.

    The Tahirih Justice Center submitted comments opposing the new rule, Aliens Subject to a Bar on Entry under Certain Presidential Proclamations; Procedures for Protection Claims, which  bars refugees who enter the U.S. between Ports of Entry from claiming asylum. Tahirih urges the Department of Justice Executive Office of Immigration Review and the Department of Homeland Security to abandon the rule in favor if policies and practices that will ensure asylum seekers have a fair opportunity to seek safety in the U.S.

  • Federal Habeas Petition Filed on Behalf of Tahirih Client Vilma Carrillo Carrillo

    In December 2018, Tahirih filed a federal habeas petition challenging the constitutionality of Vilma Carrillo Carrillo’s detention. Vilma is a Tahirih client who was detained and separated from her U.S. citizen daughter in 2018. Read more about Vilma’s case here.

  • Matter of A-B-: Attempts to Subvert Asylum Law and Dismiss Domestic Violence As a Private Affair

    In response to the recent legal decision seeking to deny asylum to survivors of domestic violence, Tahirih SF Bay Area Executive Director, Morgan Weibel, encourages immigration adjudicators and U.S. courts of appeals to interpret Matter of A-B- narrowly and continue to analyze domestic violence claims on a case-by-case basis.
