MASTER OF CEREMONIES: PENN BADGLEY

Penn currently stars as Joe Goldberg in the TV series thriller “You.”

Courageous Voice Speaker: Aicha Abdoulaye Mahamane
Aicha Abdoulaye Mahamane

From a young age, Aicha Abdoulaye Mahamane experienced violence in her origin country of Niger. After surviving sexual abuse, escaping female genital mutilation/cutting, and facing a forced marriage, she fled to Togo and then to the United States. Aicha arrived in New York in January of 2004 and for years suffered sexual assault, unpaid domestic servitude, and mental abuse at the hands of those who offered her shelter. She didn’t speak any English, didn’t have any friends or family nearby, and because of past experience with police, didn’t think she could call 911 for help. Aicha soon realized that without legal status, she would always be under the rule of someone else. She knew she had to seek real help. In December of 2012, 8 years after Aicha first arrived in the United States, Tahirih helped her file for asylum. In December 2017, just 9 months ago, her Green Card was approved! Aicha is now a full-time caregiver to her young son and is looking forward to starting her college education in nursing or social work.

CEO & Founder: Layli Miller-Muro
Layli Miller-Muro
CEO & Founder, Tahirih Justice Center

Layli Miller-Muro is the CEO and Founder of the Tahirih Justice Center. She established Tahirih in 1997 following her involvement in a high-profile case that set national precedent and revolutionized asylum law in the United States. Fauziya Kassindja, a 17-year-old girl who had fled Togo in fear of a forced polygamous marriage and female genital mutilation, was granted asylum in 1996 by the U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals. This decision opened the door to gender-based persecution as grounds for asylum. Using her portion of the proceeds from a book she and Ms. Kassindja co-authored about the case, “Do They Hear You When You Cry?,” Layli established Tahirih.

Since 2001, Layli has led Tahirih in its service to more than 27,000 women and children, growing the non-profit from a staff of six to over 100 located in offices in Atlanta GA, Baltimore MD, Greater Washington DC, Houston TX, and the San Francisco Bay Area CA.

Prior to joining Tahirih, Layli was an attorney at the law firm of Arnold & Porter, where she practiced international litigation and maintained a substantial pro bono practice. Prior to joining Arnold & Porter, Layli was an attorney-advisor at the U.S. Department of Justice, Board of Immigration Appeals.

Layli is a frequent lecturer and has appeared in numerous news outlets including CNN, Fox News, The New York Times, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. She lives in the Greater Washington, D.C. area with her husband, three children, and dog, Anis.

BENEFIT HONOREES

FIRM OF THE YEAR: FENWICK & WEST LLP
Fenwick & West attorneys were among our first Pro Bono partners in the Bay Area to receive a major win for one of our clients and her family. Associate Geoff Miller filed an adjustment of status application on behalf of a woman and her two minor children that had asylee status. As a result of Geoff’s diligence and commitment to excellence, our client and her children were granted legal permanent residency. This is just one of many examples of how Fenwick & West attorneys provide outstanding advocacy for a large number of individuals. Fenwick & West’s tireless commitment to justice makes it possible for survivors of violence to access safety and freedom.

PRO BONO OF THE YEAR: MARIA SEGARRA

Maria Segarra is a licensed attorney. She has a solo practice where she represents applicants in various immigration matters. Her prior work includes defending tenants facing eviction, helping petitioners seeking restraining orders for their protection, and representing survivors of crimes and human trafficking in their application for immigration relief.

She earned her associate’s degree from Skyline College, her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her law degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.

“In the past year, my work with each Tahirih client has given me meaning and purpose. As I listen to their stories, work to earn their trust, and advocate on their behalf, I learn from them. Each person has a different perspective. Each interaction broadens my own. And my life is fuller and more meaningful because of this work.”

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: CASSANDRA YVETTE LOPEZ

Cassandra started volunteering for Tahirih in July 2017, supporting the Social Services Program Manager and the Executive Director.  As a co-facilitator, Cassandra helps with the organization and set up of support group gatherings and joins in client peer counseling. Cassandra is studying Sociology and is completing her last semester at San Francisco State University.

“ I am truly honored to be working with the dedicated, strong, and inspirational people at Tahirih. Seeing the resilience, courage, and strength that our clients have is incredibly empowering and it motivates me to continue working towards a greater cause. Together, we will make a difference by working with each other towards liberation.”

INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR: JASON LIN
Jason, a gifted and talented high school sophomore from Los Altos, CA, hosted a charity concert in August 2018 for Tahirih SF Bay Area. This sold-out event, produced by Jason and the Youth Initiative Team, featured vocalist Millie Lin, concert pianist, Andrew Semenza, and 2018 Paganini International Violin Competition first place winner, Kevin Zhu. The afternoon of music, food, and fundraising was a huge success, raising almost $30,000 for women and girls seeking access to justice in the Bay Area.

Volunteering for Tahirih has changed how I view politics. In the process of running the concert, working with so many of my friends has taught me that even we, the youth, have the tools to actually make a difference. Almost every aspect of the entire initiative was driven by students – from student performers to student organizers and ushers. My favorite part of the entire experience was strolling around the venue right before the concert was about to start, my nerves calming as I watched my fellow volunteers work flawlessly together. Everyone seemed so energetic and enthusiastic, and was doing their job so well — it was the rewarding payoff for weeks of hard work. After the concert, a few student attendees to the concert remarked to me that they were surprised that the entire initiative was student-driven. I’m proud that this concert does not just represent a monetary donation to the Tahirih Justice Center, but also as serves as a model for students to organize similarly social-minded initiatives in the future.”
