Creation of a Partnership Against Violence

Tahirih's VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) program recently partnered with the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center (APALRC) to have area law students handle VAWA and U Visa (see article above) intakes in Asian languages and to forward thoroughly screened intake clients to Tahirih, Hogar Hispano, and Catholic Charities. APALRC has already produced flyers in several Asian languages that detail possible immigration relief for abused foreign-born women. This new network is called PAVE (Partnership Against Violence). APALRC is also training interpreter law students to accompany clients to meetings with attorneys and to potentially draft affidavits and conduct interviews.

Nam Mee Cho, Tahirih's VAWA attorney, gave the keynote speech at APALRC's fall reception and trained area law students on VAWA at Georgetown University Law School on September 29, 2001. Ms. Cho was interviewed by KBC, Korean Broadcasting Network, for the VAWA program and for her collaboration with APALRC.
