The Tahirih Justice Center represents vulnerable immigrant women and girls who are fleeing gender-based violence such as female genital mutilation, torture, rape, human trafficking, honor crimes, life-threatening widow rituals, forced marriage, and domestic violence. Our clients often have complex legal cases involving new areas of the law. Without legal advocacy, our clients could face either extreme forms of violence or certain deportation, and without the support of the Tahirih Justice Center, many would have nowhere to turn for assistance.
The legal needs of our clients are inseparable from their need for holistic social and medical services. Because they are uniquely disadvantaged by cultural obstacles, lack of financial resources, limited English proficiency, and ignorance of the US legal system, when they first come to us for help, many women and girls are in urgent need of shelter, food, clothing, and medical care. Moreover, because their immigration status prevents them from working, the majority of our clients find themselves in dire financial situations and, until their legal issues are resolved, have no income. In addition, many of our adult clients have young children who are dependent on them and who further compound the urgent needs of our clients.
