The Tahirih Justice Center is delighted to announce the opening of our San Francisco Bay Area Office on December 1, 2016, and the appointment of Morgan Weibel as its Executive Director on November 1, 2016.

Morgan-Weibel-at-Podium-TJC-2015-Gala-240Morgan has been with Tahirih for six years and has successfully led our Baltimore office for the past four years, growing it to a place prominence in the immigrant advocacy community. We are thrilled she will be bringing her expertise and dedication to serve courageous women and girls in need in the Bay Area.

The opening of the Bay Area Office is a key milestone in the Tahirih Justice Center’s ‘Ready to Soar’ campaign, which envisions expansion to five offices by 2017 in order to serve 250% more women and girls fleeing gender-based violence. The San Francisco Bay Area is the fourth office in the strategic expansion plan, whose opening is made possible by the generous support of donors across the country. We are honored to be joining a well-established and collaborative legal services community there.

A reception celebrating Tahirih’s expansion to the San Francisco Bay Area will take place on October 13. The event will be hosted by Arnold & Porter and Visa, Inc., and Emmy nominated actress and humanitarian Eva La Rue will serve as emcee.

“It’s Like Coming Home”

I was delighted to invite Morgan Weibel, a beloved member of the Tahirih family, to serve as San Francisco Bay Area Director.

The move is like ‘coming home’ for Morgan, who is a California native and a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and the University of California Hastings College of Law, where she served as the Scholarly Publications Editor on the Hastings International and Comparative Law Review and was awarded the Judith Stronach Women’s Rights Fellowship to work as a Graduate Research Fellow at the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies in San Francisco. In her own words:

“I am inspired by the strength and courage of the women and girls that I have the privilege of serving at Tahirih. Their unwavering commitment to breaking century-old cycles of violence against women and the courage that it takes to stand up against their families and traditions is remarkable.”

We are humbled to see Tahirih’s strategic vision to serve so many more courageous women and girls take flight under Morgan’s able leadership and with the generous support of our pro bono partners and incredible supporters.

With gratitude,
