Pop sensation Andy Grammer will be the featured guest at Tahirih Justice Center’s 19th Annual Gala, “Saving Lives, Celebrating Courage,” on April 14, 2016. He will pay tribute to his mother’s legacy by supporting courageous immigrant women and girls who have rejected violence in their homes and communities.

Grammer is a multi-platinum recording artist who also appeared on this season’s ABC show “Dancing With the Stars.” He cites his mother as his main inspiration for supporting the work of Tahirih to create a world where women and girls live in safety and with dignity.

Kathy Grammer, who passed away in 2009, had a passion for empowering women and a special way of inspiring women and girls to believe in themselves and in gender equality.

“My mom was a very bright light. I can remember coming home to a group of women gathered around her. Her effect on them was similar to watching wind blow into a small flame until it became a fire,” Grammer said about his mother’s transformational impact.

“Helping Tahirih save the lives of women and girls around the world furthers my mom’s vision for women’s equality. Let’s all see how big we can fan the flame that started in my mom’s living room,” Grammer said.

“Tahirih is thrilled to welcome Andy as a special guest at this year’s gala,” said Tahirih Founder and Executive Director Layli Miller-Muro. “On this wonderful evening we will highlight the heroic women and girls that inspire our mission and celebrate the army of dedicated supporters in the Baltimore and Greater DC area whose tireless commitment to justice makes our work possible.”

Globally, one in three women will experience violence or abuse in her lifetime — most often at the hands of someone she knows.

In 2015 alone, Tahirih provided nearly 600 women and girls in the Baltimore and Greater DC area with free legal and social services so that they could rebuild their lives in the wake of violence. The gala is critical to Tahirih’s ability to provide free services to hundreds of clients every year.
