2011 Benefit Highlights

The Tahirih Justice Center held our Fourteenth Annual Fundraising Benefit on May 25, 2011, at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, DC. This year, we celebrated the “Good Fellas” by recognizing the important role of men in achieving justice for women. (See a list of the 2011 Good Fellas.) The evening was a wonderful and moving celebration of fourteen years of service dedicated to courageous women and girls seeking justice from gender-based violence.

We are happy to report that the annual benefit was a great financial success, netting over $234,500—more than ever before! We are grateful to the many individuals and corporate partners whose outpouring of support contributed to raise these funds for Tahirih.

Many of Tahirih’s Good Fellas were in attendance, including actor and Tahirih supporter Rainn Wilson, who was joined as Master of Ceremonies by actress and Tahirih Board of Directors member Debra Winger; Congressman Jim Moran, who provided remarks; and Jim Sandman, recipient of the Wings of Justice Award for his lifelong career in advocacy and dedication to the promotion of pro bono legal services. Other award recipients included DLA Piper LLP (Law Firm of the Year Award); Megan E. Kaufmann of Hunton & Williams LLP (Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award); and Dr. Mana Badipour of Westwood Dental (Volunteer Service Award).

Martina Kavanova, a former Tahirih client, shared her moving struggle to escape her violent husband and achieve justice for herself and her two sons through working with the Tahirih Justice Center. Through the donated pro bono services of Daniel Nanasi of Agora Entertainment, we are able to share Martina’s story online with all of our supporters. Watch the video below or open in a new window.

We are excited to share photos from the evening, courtesy of Michael Colella, and some local press coverage: “Chatting with Rainn Wilson in DC” (NBC4) and “Wilson, Winger support Tahirih benefit” (Washington Examiner).
